Frequently Asked Questions

1. What insurance do you take?
For your convenience, we accept many insurance plans including: Aetna, Blue Cross PPO, CIGNA, United, Vista Commercial Plans, Great West, First Health Network, Best Choice, Medicare, and Coventry Network. We do not, however, accept Medicaid.
2. Do you take walk-ins?
To allow us to best serve your needs as well as those of our other patients, we request that you call the office at (954) 418-8146 to make an appointment. We try to afford our patients the time necessary to address their concerns, and this is best accomplished by regular time slots assigned to each individual. We will do our best to try and accommodate your schedule.
3. Does the doctor respond to e-mails immediately?
No. If you need a rapid response to a question, we suggest that you contact the office. In situations where Dr. Lavernia is traveling, the staff will be able to contact him if necessary.
4. What do I do if I need a referral for a specialist?
In cases where you need to see a specialist, we ask that you check first with your Insurance Carrier to determine if a referral is indeed necessary. If your carrier informs you that you DO need a referral, and you have not been seen in our office previously for the condition, Dr. Lavernia may request that you make an appointment to discuss it in more detail before sending you to a specialist.
5. I saw that Dr. Lavernia performs FAA exams. What class physicals does he do?
Dr. Lavernia performs physicals for Class II and Class III. He does NOT do Class I certifications. The cost for the FAA physical is $80.00 payable by the patient either as cash, check or credit card (these costs are NOT covered by insurance).
6. I have Diabetes and would like to learn how I can better manage it. Do you offer any instruction?
We offer a Diabetes class on a monthly basis in both English and Spanish. This class normally lasts for approximately one (1) hour and is conducted with the assistance of a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). Classes are on Wednesday’s at 1:30 pm. Interested parties MUST pre-register due to the varying subject matter. If you are currently an active patient with our office, Dr. Lavernia will visit with you on an individual basis immediately following the presentation.
7. I only need to have fasting blood work done. Can I just come in?
You must call the office to make arrangements. Please remember that even though you are not seeing Dr. Lavernia, our staff needs to be aware of any test that he may want performed. Not all tests require you to fast, such as an A1C or PT. For tests that DO require fasting or where it is highly recommended, such as those for cholesterol, fasting means nothing to eat or drink (with the exception of water, which we greatly encourage) for eight (8) hours prior to the test. You may also take any medications that you normally take.
8. How do I get results for labs, mammograms, x-rays, etc.?
Once we receive the results, Dr. Lavernia will review them and note your chart. It is only AFTER he has “signed off” that we will be able to contact you. If it has been more than three days since your test and you have not heard from us, please contact the office. You, the patient, are your own best advocate, and we encourage our patients to take personal responsibility for their well being. If you would like a copy of your results, we would be more than happy to fax them to you, or you can bring in a self addressed stamped envelope and we will gladly mail them to you.
9. I see Dr. Lavernia for management of my diabetes, but my insurance requires that I have a Primary Care Doctor. Can I see him for other things not related to my Diabetes?
Absolutely! Dr. Lavernia is an Internist who diagnoses and treats a variety of illnesses and chronic diseases, with a specialty geared towards Diabetes. He sees patients sixteen (16) years of age and older.
10. I have insurance that requires me to meet a high deductible. Is there any way I can make an arrangement to pay in monthly installments?
We understand that there have been many people affected by the economic downturn. However, we are unable to offer payment plans. Any deductible and/or co payment must be received at the time of service. For your convenience, we accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover card.
11. I called the office for a refill on my medication and was told that Dr. Lavernia was out of town. Now what?
We strongly encourage our patients to notify us at least five (5) days in advance of any refill requests. Please DO NOT expect our staff to call in prescriptions in Dr. Lavernia’s absence. They are NOT permitted to authorize prescriptions (new, refills or changes to an existing prescription). Your pharmacy has the ability to supply you with enough of your prescription to carry you through several days with the exception of certain medication 9narcotics, sleep aids, etc) Please ask them to do so until we are able to call in your request.
